port and polish??
Just wondered if polishing the inlet and outlet ports will make much of a difference to an 8v gti??? In the middle of reconditioning an engine and thinking of doing it. Am i just wasting time??

Re: port and polish??
personnaly i have never done this but thinking about the way an engine works it should improve performance as it would improve the way the engine can breathe i don't see y it wouldn't make an improvement....
worth a try

Re: port and polish??
Due to manufacturing constraints especially 'back in the day' port finish was overlooked (incidently modern cars find vast amounts of efficiency in improving the quality and finish of ports) so they often are covered in more shite textured metal than you may imagine... because of this im going to say..... GO FOR IT!

Re: port and polish??
go for it but dont go mad on the polishing on the inlet.
i have little experience of this (messed about with my beetle years ago) but from research the turbulance caused by a bit of roughness actually helps. go mad on the exhaust side but just smooth inlet a bit and not mirror polish.
then do mine!

Re: port and polish??
Lewis1641 is right, you need a bit of turbulance on the inlet side to promote good mixing of the air and fuel. If it doesn't mix properly you'll get less power and higher fuel consumption

Re: port and polish??
vw head usually tend to respond quite well to porting, due to poor and restrictive casting
if you can get it done cheap enough its worth doing

Re: port and polish??
On a digifant a textured inlet would make no difference to the air/fuel mixture, as the injectors squirt fuel past where you would be able to polish inside the port. You guys are thinking of carb'd engines. Personally I'd bore out the ports to match the manifolds and get them as wide as possible with a dremel and polish the life out of them. The smoother they are the faster you can get air/exhaust gases in/out, resulting in better throttle response and more power across the rev range
