Tyre fitments
Alright guys! Since the 6n2 Gti has gone im saving for the next ride a MK5 golf, Which will be mine first friday of 2012.
Only problem is between now and then is a long time and its got me thinking of what i want to do to it to pass the time. Its sat on the standard Monza alloys that come on the Gti at the moment, But they have to go.
Im pretty much set on some BBS CH reps. I will be buying these new so will come without rubber and im looking into what tyre sizes i might get and this is where i need your help.
If im spending many pounds on rubber, not only do i want to buy a high quality tyre but also one thats going to look right.
Thus far i have never played with any sort of stretches. But think they look amazing so why not give it a try.
The wheels are 18" 8J. Apparently the normal tyres for these are 225 45's but i dont want to be that boring.

On the other hand i dont want to go overboard and hate it. And with only pictures to look at from other peoples wheels im worried i will go too streched and hate it.
Here are the options :

Re: Tyre fitments
nice wheels.
of the options above i would ho for the 205/40 - they dont look too severe.
my thinking is that massive stretch on sensible width rims looks a bit daft - like you are doing it for the sake of it.
what is the standard size ont he car? suspect they are either 225/40/18 or 225/45/17 in which case be careful with insurance - if you have a crash and you have fitted narrower than standard tyres you might not be best popular.
how about 225's on a 9 inch rim?

Re: Tyre fitments
Ive got 215/35 front and 215/40 rear on my bora. The 215/40 look good to me on the rear, the 35s are like elastic bands.
I wouldnt go with 35s again but they were with the wheels when i bought them, i dont use mine daily now so it doesnt matter too much to me, but if i were to get new fronts i would go with 205/40s.
I think mk5s have pretty big arches to fill so would deffo be better with a 40 profile and a nice healthy drop.

Re: Tyre fitments
The standard sizes are 225/40 dave, and insurance wise i will be pretty shafted as the car has a map and will have coilovers on it which i cannot claim for because im not over 25 yet. shhhh
The wheels are not available in staggard widths so no 9J's..
Thanks guys. You have been helpfull
