correct offsets, spacers and stuff

Could someone please explain to me the general rules. im just ditching my rs6's for some smaller wheels and need to know what im doing.

i have the impression its related to how far the wheel sticks out or the spacing. could someone please clear it up for me

higher the offset the further under the arch the wheel is. for example my bbs's r et 36s yet my old 16s were et25.

also you have to take into consideration how wide the wheels them selves are as if the high offset and 9inch wide but theres only and inch after the face of the wheel theres going to be more in the arch and cause problems with rubbing on the actual strut itsself.

from memory your car standard is about et45. if you stick to something around et35 and above you'll be ok. if you go above 45 you'll start having to run spacers to clear calipers.

as liam says, the higher the number, the further in the wheel will sit.

offset also affects how cars drive. mk2's are not overly sensitive to changes but not sure about mk4's.

i uset to have an mx5 (et45) that was running aftermatket et35 wheels and it was terribly. really bad steering and tramlining.

one more thing. the actual offset is the difference in mm between the dead centre of the wheel and the actual mounting face of the wheel - thinking in those terms makes things a bit easier
