Post  jonny54 Mon Nov 28, 2011 6:25 pm

Well.. im not actually in possetion of the car yet, but only because the previous owner is waiting for his company car to arrive. However i thought i would start my build thread off as im bored in the mean time Crying or Very sad

I was origionally looking at a MK2 Audi A3 Tdi Sport. But after asking for some advice on the performance and economy on a friends golf (Which has the same engine) The chap offered me his outright for the sum of £4000. So i bit his hand off Cool

Its a more door 2004 Mk5 Golf GT tdi.
The previous owner has replaced the grandad steeze front end with the gti front end as well as the side skirts, It has the Gti monza alloy wheels which will be up for sale straight away. The interior is kitted out all Gti'ish as well with the tartan deep bucket seats I love you And its been generic mapped to 170bhp.
Its got 95,000 on the clock and has 8 months MOT and will hav 12 months tax when i get it. We are also going halves on the cost of the service overall!!

There are a couple of downsides though, Its been a family car so un-doubtably there will be some family style wear and tear here and there (although i couldnt find any) The car is fitted with a toe bar as well as all the electrics to go with it.

Heres some pics:

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0648-1
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0702
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0701

First and foremost i want to be rid of that toe bar, unfortunatly its not as simple as unbolting it, as the bumper has been cut to accomodate it :

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0703

So ive been trawling the classified to find a decent condition rear bumper and came across this:

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0719

Pictures a bit sketchy but its a 2006 gt tdi rear bumper the same as mine, It also came with a colour coded lower valance which im contemplating fitting, But think i prefere the black plastic one. Opinions?
The lot cost me £40 which i was happy with and will solve the toe bar issue completely!

Next up just general touch ups like De-wiper and Remove the Gti badge off the front grill because its a lie!!

Im pretty set on a FK AK kit as i have had them on all my other VAG cars and i like the product, I shall also be ordering a Whiteline rear anti-roll bar at the same time.

Wheel wise ive been having quite a dilema. But think im pretty set on some 18" BBS Ch reps in black with a pollished lip, running 205/40's for a slight stretch. Then eventually getting a set of calibre vintage wheels or something similar for summer wheels when i have fiancially recovered.

Im not planning on running really low, I want it to be more practical than the Polo Gti i had before this as it was quite difficult on some of lincolns streets. Never the less, I am not going to have much arch gap going on.

And i think thats pretty much everything covered. When i get the car i will give it a good clean and take some pic's for updates. But until then, Thats all folks!!

I'm coming round to the mk5 now, wasn't a fan for the longest time but saw a gorgeous r32 a couple of months back and it all kinda snapped into place and now I like em, go figure! Looks a good base for a quality build thread mate.

This like a good car at a very nice price. You will prob need rear bumper mounts if your taking the tow bar off.

^ What he said. Unfortunatly!

Thanks for the comments guys. I also have not been one for the looks of the mk5, that coupled with the general price and my experiences with my previous golf really put me off.

But after a while the shape has grown on me, not to mention how much sense it makes to have an economical car at the moment. Fortunatly this is still a step up in power from all my previous cars so will still be an improvement!
Ive got all sorts of mad idea's going on and cant wait to get started putting this car right!

Matt - Doesnt the bumper just have four bolts holding it on?? As far as i know its a ten minute job.. what do i need the mounts for?

Sakers - I was set on the colour coded bumper, but after looking round the car a bit more and noticing how much black plastic trim it has on it, im not sure if it would look out of place if i put it on

on cars without toe bars you normaly have a bracket or damper that fastens on to the bumper carrier. When you fit a toe bar you normaly take the braket/damper out. You might be able to leave the toe bar on bracket on and just saw the bottom bit of so the new bumper fits just over the top. I might be wrong i avnt had a bumber of a mk5 but I know my mk2 like it and bmw are the same.

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 Empty Re: Jonnys Moredoor Mk5

Post  jonny54 Sat Jan 07, 2012 7:13 pm

Alright guys.

I picked the car up last night and went for a good drive. It was great! I was worried that i would have fogotten how to drive after 4 months (My longest stint without having a steering wheel infront of me since i was 17) but the car was so easy to drive it was just really smooth and enjoyable.
I was suprised by the torque and speed it was capable of and how stable it feels when pushing through a bend.

So today i started stripping down the rear of the car to remove the towbar, heres some pics:

Its jacked up on axel stands in this picture, which is why it looks odd.
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0752

Heres the discusting toe bar i need to remove:
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0753
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0754

Fortunatly removing the rear bumper was quite easy with only a couple of caked up bolts slowing me down, i then removed the toe hook itself and i was left with this:

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0761

Once i had removed all the dodgey wiring for it all i had a go at fitting the new bumper i had sourced to replace the origional item which had been cut for the toe bar to go through.
Unfortunatly there was a problem. The impact support bar had been replaced when the toebar was fitted with an after market adapter item which had a bracket welded to the bottom which you can see in the above picture.
This bracket was in the way of the bumper fitting.

Luckily Adi from Deep shine detail came round today to give me a quote for a Stage 1 Enhancement, and while he was here i explained to him my problem and he offered to cut the bracket off for me tomorrow. Fantastic.

It was then that i realized that amoungst all the other GTi parts that had been fitted to the car, the exhaust was one of them. This meant that the Gt tdi rear bumper and vallance that i had bought to replace the origional bumper wouldnt fit due to the lack of twin exhaust cut outs Shocked

So now im on the lookout for a rear lower vallance in GT or GTi spec, There are a couple of ED38 classifieds so should be able to sort that out no probs. But in the meantime i will just re-build the back end tomorrow without the vallance.

On closer inspection the paintwork is in good overall condition, But deffinatly needs a good working over as the previous owner admitted to never cleaning it.
The previous owner also said that he had never serviced the car since he had owned it, The service indicator is on at the moment too. Also when i start the car the warning message 'Emissions workshop' illuminates and the orange emmisions light is on as well.
One flip key doesnt turn off the imobolizer and the seconds works but looks like its had a hard life.

My plan is to sort the car out in 3 stages:

Stage 1

-Full service at MG raw VW specialist.
-Have the 'Emissions workshop' Fault diagnosed and fixxed.
-Have the unworking key coded to the imobolizer.

Stage 2

-Fk Sport Edition Plus Coilovers.
-Whiteline rear ARB.
-Dubmeister Road legal pressed plates.

Stage 3

-Have tyres fitted to my AMG wheels (Pics Below)
-Purchase spiggott rings (And 3mm spacer + extra length bolts if required)
-Paintwork Enhancement by Deep-Shine Detail.

So i shall deffinatly be busy over the next few months.
A week or two ago i went and picked up some Mercedes AMG wheels from scunthorpe. Turns out in the end they are reps with no markings on the back despite the sellers claims. After a little bartering, i managed to get the seller down to a price i was happy with and took them off his hands pirat
They are 19" 9.5J all round and ET44.
The tyres for them are coming from BennyBoo and are 235/35's for a slight stretch. Im aware that space is going to be tight under the front arch, so plan on rolling the arches and possibly going further. We'll see. Heres some pics:

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 3b2c29fa
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0740
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0745-1

Anyway, thats all for now folks. I will post some real pictures up once i have given the car a good wash and hoover out.

Any suggestions, info and critisism welcome Rolling Eyes

A massive thanks to Adi from Deep-Shine detail who helped me grind off the toe bar mounts on my impact support bar

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0762

The car looks all Gti again now

Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0763
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0764

All the remains is to source my rear vallance to fit over the exhausts and i shall be onto working towards stage one.

In the mean time giving the car the first hoover out it has had in a couple of years. Its evident that at some point theres been a large black dog in the boot as there are very large hairs everywhere!!
Then a good wash down to get rid of all the road grime and crap. Pics to follow this

Edit - In the pictures the origional lower vallance is sat there to get an idea of what it will look like. It still has a hole in it from where the towbar went through it.

Post  jonny54 Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:20 pm

Right guys. Time for another update!

Stage one is well in progress.

The service has been done, It didnt do badly. It was evident that it hadnt been done for a good number of years though. I also got the garage to give it a once over generally too, And the verdict was that its a good car overall Smile
He said its clear that at somepoint its been owned by a boyracer or a Vw enthusiast due to all the Gti bits and bobs on it and the map which all in all would of amounted to thousands so it may have been driven hard, He went on to say its clear its not been looked after that well since but nothing that cant be turned around.

Whilst the service was done, I got them to get it on diagnostics and quite a few problems came up, Here they are:

P0691 Rad fan 1 Short To Earth
P3102 Intake Manifould Flap Motor
P0673 Glow plug Cyl 3
P1570 Ecu disabled
046E Alarm Horn Signal Will Not Reset

So not as simple as just the EGR valve which was my first guess.
Ive been doing some digging though and it turns out that the intake manifould flap (IMF) is becoming a common problem with the older MK5's and theres endless threads about people complaining. Luckily i found a couple of good threads which clealy inform me that the IMF shares the same fuse as the radiator fan.

If it works out as planned, then once the IMF has been replaced with an uprated item and the ECU's stored fault codes are reset then both the IMF and the Radiator fan 1 should not come back!
At the same time im going to get the glowplug sorted out.
However need to do some more digging into the 'ECU disabled'
The car has been re-maped at some point, and i dont know who by. But im under the impression the two might be linked. Can anyone confirm this?

Im also looking into a performance clutch and single mass fly wheel because at peak torque the clutch slips ever so slightly. This is probably a long term thing for me to look into once i have done all the other bits done though because its not very bad at all atm, im just being piccy! haha.

As for the allarm, The MK5 alarms are prone fault and go off all the time. So im expecting that the previous owner has just removed the fuses. Im not too bothered about that though.

I have been searching for a rear vallance to replace the origional item that came on the car which bears the wound from where the old toe bar used to stick out.
Theres a few around that are non genuine for about £70. So i called VW to check how outragous their price was and it turns out i can have it for a mere £62!!
Happy days, So i know where my next weeks wages are going now Cool

The problem i had with the keys has been resolved. I was looking at getting the uncoded one recoded to work but in the end i settled for combining the casing from the uncoded one with the inards of the coded one, which leaves me with an almost new working key, and a haggard un working one ( which i will have coded when i have a space £60)

So fresh back from the garage, i decided to give the car its first wash in about 6 months and its first since i had owned it.
It was such a mess before and i cant beleive how much difference its made. I shall let the pictures do the talking:

Before:
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0803
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0804
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0805
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0806
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0813

After:
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0815
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0816
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0826
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0817
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0818
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0825

And then i removed the rear wiper:
Jonnys Moredoor Mk5 IMAG0827

The rear wiper is a helpfull tool. However its a niggle for me seeing how dirty my back window is whenever i have used it. And also in my opinion it tidys up the back end quite subtly Rolling Eyes

Once i have the rear vallance sorted. Im going to get saving towards finishing Stage 1. I am very much looking forward to Stage 2 though! Very Happy

Thanks guys. Should be all sorted before UD this year.

And Tolse. It was good to meet you too, Your car was very interesting! I felt a bit rude poking around it, but its only the second mk5 i have seen close up..
I dont miss the rear wiper at all to be honest. It only makes the rear window look dirtyer when used and cluttered when not used. I tend to clean my cars quite a lot so not have visibility will never be a problem for long. I have done it to all my VW cars in the past Shocked

New Gti vallance and throttle bodies were ordered yesterday from VW dealership lincoln. Shouldnt be long till the cars looking complete now!

I know mine is a van so not quite a mk 5, but I dont even have a rear window, never mind a rear wiper and visability has never really been an issue.... never used it on my old mk2 golf either, but the de-wiper conversion looked worse than having a wiper on them...as its in the glass on a mk 5 it looks a whole let better Smile
