Random poor idling
Anyone got any ideas on this ? happens completely at random, whether the car is cold, or has been run to temperature. quite annoying at times as the car will run extremely lumpy and cut out in queues and i have to keep higher revs on until it kicks itself back to normal.

Sounds like the ISV to me matey, It gets clogged up over time and can get a little sticky for no reasons. NUKE it with carb cleaner

+1
mine was like this until I cleaned out the idle control (although I soaked mine in petrol overnight)

make sure you dont submerge the electrial connector on it, wont do it any harm but wont do it much good either....carb cleaner works just as well, but can also push dirt back in under force...this is why the soak and rinse method works well...much like the washing up

Re: Random poor idling
take the main jet out of your carb and clean it as it can get blocked up and this is one of the causes. also round where the carb is mounted there is a rubber seal check for splits or anything in that as it lets more air in and tickover goes abit funny

Re: Random poor idling
cos its a 1.6 it wont have an ISV, so id clean your carb out with some carb cleaner
then id check the rubber flange that holds the carb to the inlet manifold for any signs of perishing (there only about 8quid to replace anyway)
the id check the pull down unit on the side of the carb
on the side of the carb you'll see a black plastic disc with 2 vacum pipes going into it,
take the air box off and the choke flap should be almost shut with engine off, take off one of the vacum tubs and suck on it (cant remeber which one of em it is, try both) when you suck on the tube it should pull the choke flap down by about 30 degrees
if it dosent you need a new pull down unit
