Cambelt change problem
Hi guys got a bit of a problem - doing a cambelt change...
Got the crankshaft and intermediate pulley lined up and the camshaft pulley notch in line with the front of the cylinder head, put the belt back on and it wont fire up. The belt spins fine but it doesnt fire.
When the bottom two pulleys are lined up, shouldnt that be top dead centre? However having done the screwdriver check top dead centre falls at a completely different point on the crankshaft pulley.
Also when the two are lined up the dizzy rotor arm is not in line with the notch on the rim... is that also a problem?
Having followed the Haynes/various guides and it not working what should I try?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers
Ash

Re: Cambelt change problem
turn the engine over till no.1 cylinder is at tdc, then check the rotor arm on the dizzy is pointing to 1 on the dizzy. after this match the cam pully to the front of the engine if thats where its suppose to be timed up. put belt back on. rotate engine twice and check everything it still how it was b4 you rotated. then fire her up mate. should cure the problem.

Re: Cambelt change problem
should fink it is, on vw 8v engines the cam sometimes has too different timing marks and the cank pulley on my old 1.6 8v also had to timing marks, so we timed mine up this way to get it to work again.

Re: Cambelt change problem
I dont know if this helps or if you know this...but the timing on a PB engine for the crank is taken from the Gear box end, not the pulley. There should be a plug in the top of your gear box right near the block, pop it out and undearneath is the fly wheel, should be a flat spot that lines up at TDC cyl 1

Re: Cambelt change problem
ITS DONE!!!! I willmake it to the meet afterall. Basically we were using the notches on the crank pulley to line up when we shouldve been using the one that drives the fan belt off the crank pulley!
Never heard a sweeter noise than the engine starting up again!

Re: Cambelt change problem
as long as theres brews on the go and av got fags i can roll the arches. its all about how the scirrocco arch covers fit on and come off to how easy ghetto rolling will be.

Re: Cambelt change problem
The arch covers seem to link into the main bodykit and drop into the bumper at the front so should just pop off, we will see though :-)
Re: Cambelt change problem
