I thought so too, but when I went to unscew it, the ball bit poped off and left a black cog shaped tip on it

Yea thats the bit you need to unscrew, that bit is supposed to stay inside the knob I do believe

Had a right ballache today removing the offending gearbox, it refused to come quietly, and has absolutley ruined my back. Going to have to have a go at fitting the 4+E tomorrow now, hopefully with someones help if I can get it

Re: Adi's GTI powered '86 golf GL
Finally got my 4+E box in yesterday, feels a lot nicer but the car is disappointingly slower due to longer ratios. Since I had the bottom ball joints off to get the driveshafts in and out, both front wheels are now pointing in opposite directions and the tracking is drastically wrong! I put some crappy teardrops on it to save ruining the tyres on my RAs till I get the tracking done.

Re: Adi's GTI powered '86 golf GL
I'm planning yet another conversion, but need to save some pennies for a donor car
But for now yes, I need to get the ignition timing checked properly, borrowed a timing light of gary, just finding time to get round to it. I swapped a knackered top mount for a decent mk3 one gary gave me earlier but it doesnt fit right, the spring clonks on lock so I need to get a proper one on it.

Re: Adi's GTI powered '86 golf GL
I'm sure another pair of hands would have been useful! To make matters worse I've just found out Gary has a crane!
I've got the gti beam all stripped today, came apart nicely, Gary's just made me up a piece of brake pipe as one wouldn't play the game and come quietly! Just got to give the calipers a lick of paint and get the set up on the car tomorrow I also got my tracking done (badly, its going back!) so my RA's are back on. I've weighed in my spare PB block, rear beam, and gti gearbox today so I can now see some floor in my garage!

A mk2 GL with rear discs? OUTRAGE!!
As you can see my shoes were about dead anyways, so it would have been rude not to really.
You can just see them hiding behind my wheels

Only thing left to do really is tidy the bodywork up and refurb the RA's. Then when I can afford it, it's ABF time!

Re: Adi's GTI powered '86 golf GL
I've done a few small jobs today, had to paint the front calipers red to match the rears, not my preffered colour (I'd have them silver) but its just the paint I had at the time. I've fixed the broken pipe from the flying saucer to the rocker cover with another bit of pipe. Also removed the trumpet from the airbox so when the calipers are dry I'l enjoy some induction roar

Re: Adi's GTI powered '86 golf GL
I've had a few busy days on the car, I stripped all the carpets and soundproofing out as the passenger side front and rear footwells had puddles of water in them, which I found to be caused by no scuttle rain tray and a leaky floorpan grommet. I now have a rain tray made from a mk3 interior bootlid cover and I've sealed up anything on the floor that I think may let water in. After a few days of drying the carpets and soundproofing out I spent a good 3 hours or so cleaning the carpets which I'm well pleased with, so much so that I've almost declared the inside a no shoes allowed zone! I did have some pictures of the puddles in the floorpan and during refitting the carpets but my phone decided it would lose them Anyways heres some pics of it now...
And I made some little brackets for the parcel shelf supports as they were both broken off and plastic welded them on, but the phone lost pics of that
I've also repaired the interior bootlid panel thats been broken since I got the car and I've retrimmed it in black vinyl
