Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
Been getting on with the wiring a little bit and have finally figured out what everything does.
After much undercover work on the RX8 owners club using a proxy server as they banned me at 1st for wanting to put RX8 seats in a VW.Ive cracked it!
Ive got front and rear slide
back decline,incline
Lumbar support
and 2 more movements that ive forgotten about but will remember when i upload the pics and vids later!
Just got to sort out the subframes to fit the mk3 bits now but that doesnt concern me much.
Also another little update,as ive not found the wheel i really really want and with a desperation to get rid of the ones that are on,i managed to pick up some new 16's of the Borbet C variety.Got them for a good price and im off to pick them up from Rotherham this afternoon.
Im undecided whther to get them Aeromaxed http://www.aerocoat.net/Aeromaxtm.htm or have the faces windows and front lips mirror polished.
Either way i want shinyness
More updates tonight all being well

Cheers Jonny, feel free to pop down anytime mate.Be nice to see how the new motor is coming on
Well just got back from Rotherham(grim.com) picked me wheel up and they are a little more curbed than i expected but they are being refurbed and powdercoated anyway so it's all good.
Got new tyres on 2 and about 5 mm on the others but i think i will need different tyres to the 205/45 16s that are on but i will have a test fit in the morning and see how they sit. They are a much nicer looking wheel than i thought and im hoping they suit the car well.
I will get some pics up when i fit them

Right here we go.
The wheels:
Borbet C 7.5 16" 4x100 ET30-205/45/R16 Tyres
Spangly new low level jack for the occasion
So i fitted 2 on one side and stood back and looked and wasnt impressed in the slightest.I know the tyre profile is high so it would probably benefit from having a set of 195/40/r16's on but i wasnt overly keen on the way it sat.
I know they are 300% better than the wheels that are on it but i was hoping it would sit much better than this.
Pics
You see regardless of the look of the wheels in this pic,i really liked the way they sat from the arch.
So im in two minds what to do.Im into them for £230 then it will be £40 for centre caps £200 for a refurb and Aeromax and then £300 in rubber.
If after all that i still dont like them i cant see me getting £770 for them!
I think the only way it could look good is if i had a bit of poke out the back and lowered it more which i didnt really want to do as i wont it useable.
What do you guys think?
In other news ive finally got my seats wiring figured out!!!
Lots of fannying about with wiring diagrams and getting shunned by the RX8 owners club as they were going in a VW
So i signed up with a different account and suddenly aquired an RX7(well they wernt to know any different ) Anyway they were much more helpful and send me a few schematics so i got to work and hey ho here we go.

(if your not on facefluff im just uploading a vid to tinypic)
Ive got a machinist at work making me some new knobs to go over the existing switches as they dont look very nice and ive just taken delivery of some Gliptone leather cleaner/conditioner which i shall apply before i cover them up ready for subframe fabrication day.
Oh and a quick pic of the new door card installed complete with electric window conversion

Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
Right so after fannying about with other peoples cars this week ive managed to get on the mk3.
1st off strip the interior out
Then i thought id check to see what the original subframes on the seats look like to give me an idea of the cutting and welding for the new seats.
Turns out they will be a bit of a pig,not got my head round them yet but i will suss it by tomorrow.
I thought id bob the drivers seat in to see how it looked.
After my erection went down i decided to put the other one in.
I then had some alone time in the toilet and decided i will leave the headache for tomorrow and while the interior is out i will bob the drivers side electric window conversion in.
Job done,i now have 2 fully working electric windows and a couple of spares in the garage ready for when they fluck up lol
I will be sending the wheels off for Aeromaxing next week and ive got a couple of part worn tyres in 195/40r16 to try on the wheels when they come back.If i like the look of them with that profile i shall buy 4 new ones.

Right so heres the engine pics as requested.
Pistons are Forged Mahle 82.48mm oversized, not too sure on the rods yet but i will replace them with forged ones if they arnt.
The full engine looks in good nice, turns over by hand and has plenty of compression.
Will start the strip down fun next weekÂ
Ive got some info on the engine and have been told that it was built by Grant Motorsport. Not heard of them but i will have a google later on.

You going to be using the borbets or keeping the 17's?

Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
After a lot of stalking ive finally got a reply off the owner of this engine from a few years ago!
"Hello mate! Sorry for the delayed response, been moving house and only just got tinternet. The basics of My knowledge of the engine were in the original advert.
I bought the car nearly 5 years ago now rom a Guy over Reading way. When I bought the car, the guy didn't know much about it, He only bought the car cos it looked nice!
I did a bit of digging as it had a club gti sticker in the window, and got a response rom a guy who knew the guy that built it many years ago.
He basically said that if the block was still blue in colour then it still had the grant motorsport engine in it. Sure enough it did. And it went well too, making 217.7 bhp.
I took the car off the road nearly 2 years ago to do a simple head gasket change as there was an oil leak from the side of the head, and it was smoking in the morning on start up due to valve stem oil seals. When I took the head off, I noticed the bores were slightly scored, and didn't want to risk rebuiding everything incase it was no good after. The project was put on hold and a mate of mine offered Me a newly built forged motor, so it made sense to buy his and charge it rather than rebuild the one you now have!
You can see the car it came from in the mk2's for sale section. I've now taken a deposit on the car which I'm gutted about but needs must at the mo.
I can't remember who bought the engine off Me. All I know is that He was from the North somewhere, and it was His sister who collected the engine off me and off it went in the back of her clio.
Sorry I can't be of much help about the engine itself. Hope you manage to rebuild it, let Me know the progress!
Good luck mate, Ash"
So there we go,looks like it is a Grant Motorsport engine.Ive checked the bores and there is a minute amount of scoring so im going to get them honed and the rings matched to the bores and i will take it from there.Result!
It also came out of this car which he has just sold.Looks nice too!

Yeah but only 10-15mm,should look a lot better but would prefer not to go any lower
Im suprised you cant get the mirror blanks to fit mate,if you think about it both3&5 doors have the ame fitment mirrors so the blanks should fit the same?

Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
Right so ive got a bit more done on the seat subframes inbetween fixing other peoples cars(ive decided a friend in need is a pest)
While i had all the interior out i thought i would tetroseal the whole floor pan for a bit of added protection incase i keep the car for a few years.
Give the seat subframe a couple of coats of filler primer, quick rub down and then a coat of L041 Black(i had it in) and then a couple of coats of clear.
Job done
Ive got he other side tacked up and im gunna finish it off at work at the weekend. Then its a case of building the interior back up,deep cleaning the carpets and fitting the seats.
Next interior job is whip the headliner out to give to the retrimmer,i keep putting it off as im still mardy i flucked it up myself
Then thats the interior done.
Exterior done
Wheels should be back as soon as they get their finger out.
Then i shall stick an mot on it and drive it over summer while i build up the engine ready to go in over winter.
The head is currently getting a soaking in my parts washer. Then im to decide whether to go with big valves or not when i send it to get skimmed and port and polished.

Sooo me wheels finally arrived!
Real nice finish on them, well chuffed with them. They will certainly do for this year.Just got to get a couple more tyres and then see if i can get some new centre caps at ultimate dubs this weekend. If not i will get some off the internet.
Going for 20mm spacers on the rear and not sure about the fronts yet.
Pics
In other news ive got one seat subframe welded in and the seat plumbed in and bolted down.
Just got to weld the other in but i need to get a couple of new tips for the welder after the weekend.
(no pics as im sure your sick of seeing them by now)
Also just received a corrado 2.9 lower inlet manifold with injectors which im going to either clean up and use on my engine or cut up to use the flanges if i decide to make a short runner inlet manifold. Not too keen on running slimline fans but at least the part is here.
Also got a full engine loom ready for tidying up
Hopefully see some of you at UD this weekend

Dude they are gonna look amazing. Those spacers have brought them out perfect too, they'l sit perfect with the arches sat over the stretch. I do think you should space the fronts out too. Got stance yo

Cheers mate.I reckon i might go 10mm on the front as i already have some of them lol.
Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
Had a productive day today.Got the tyres on to test fit, just got to wait for my spigot rings and centre caps to get here which should be tomorrow.
The 195s have a slight stretch on them which i think is just about right.
(iphone pics)
While i was in the garage i sorted the other seat subframe out and welded it into the car. Then fitted the front carpet after a wet vac,had to modify it slightly to sit nice with the new subframes. Also done away with the heating ducts that go to the rear footwell as they are pretty pointless as i will never really have people in the back.
I also replaced ALL the central locking pipework with a hardened 10bar airline flexi hose, just incase i ever have a pipe kink as if the central locking stops working when i have locked the car up im pretty flucked!
No pics but i will show you the finished article hopefully by the end of the week.

So.The seats are in and done and the whole front end is back together.FINALLY
What a ball ache.
Pics
Then the new Toyos came
and the centre caps
and the spigott rings
soooo i decided to fit the wheels
Had to drop it another 30mm all round which is a bit too dickhead low for my liking but i had to do this to make the wheels look half decent.
Im not convinced yet.....please convince me lol
Pics
Also ordered a new headunit as mine packed up
A set of Bonrate lower air ducts for the front bumper which i shall get sprayed
Some pointy valve caps to try and be a scene sheep
and a smooth cover for my single wiper.
Jobs a gudn

OMG I've just sex wee'd. I'd lose the VR6 splitter, get a slim and smooth US style one and drop the front more. If not it looks wank and I will buy those wheels!

Coils are all the way down now, dont really want to take the helpers out but it looks like im going to have to.
Re: Potter!MK3 Golf(Engine build time!!)Bought another mk3 too :P
I didn't think you would have to drop it that much more than you have done, but yea, helpers out for sure. I do think a US splitter is the way forward, somehow the VR6 splitter just looks awkward imo, just doesn't fit in.
