budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
introducing my mk2 8 valve moor door.
the simplified story...
I wanted a gti that would drive nicely and look good.
i had a 3 door track prepped car that was rotting. needed 2 sills, rear arches, rear corners under the lights and various floor repairs. i decided it was too much to do given my time, space and money.
i headed to ebay for a cheap car. there was a jade green 5 door in a rough but solid state in grimsby. with the sniper loaded it became mine for £201, taxed and tested.
it was rough though, paint was manky, front end impact, evidence of attempted theft.
as it was jade green, small bumper AND 5 door i decided to roll with the "grandad" theme. if you are into air cooled cars i am sure you are aware of "resto cal". basically stock body and interior, lowered and nice wheels. this is my interpretation of a budget water cooled resto cal!
took it to my mates garage where we stripped off the good bits from the track car and transplanted to the 5 door. this includes eibach lower strut brace, (sold the upper one as they dont really do anything on a g2), polybushed and seam welded lower arms, eibach ARB with poly bushes, koni adjustables with eibach springs.
wheels next. i wanted bbs rs's but they were and still remain out of the question. ebay again. got a set of porsche replica twists for £140 with tyres. tyres were way too big so bought a set of chavvy 17's with decent 205/40/17's and stretched them onto the twists. manages to sell the chav wheels for what i'd bought them for and the porsche tyres covered the wheels. awesome, free wheels and tyres. just had to splash £120 ona set of adapters.
My mate then stepped in and kindly offered to lend me some cash to tidy the bodywork. My plan was to get the front end and just the door bottoms done on the cheap but he persuaded me to pretty much paint the full car. eventually it was all done bar the roof and tailgate.
mot came next, eventually passed! Ran it as it was for a while but the rear wheels were too wide causing rubbing with ANY weight in the back.
they have been replaced with genuine Porsche Boxster 17'S which are a better fit.
the day i drove it home
first incarnation
new porsche wheels
next job, coilovers then engine from the track car.

Re: budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
the track bitch is the car in my sig at the minute. same suspension as mentioned above but with a dirty great rear anti roll bar and a cage inside.
seats were corbeau buckets with 4 point harnesses (WHERE ARE YOU NOW, DIAMOND HELL???)
Totally stripped out inside, plastic windows lightweight track biyatch
engine was/is a 1.8 8v digifant. it was rebuilt in the 90's, lightened, balanced and blueprinted. standard internals sadly. had a full stainless magnex system and a pipercross filter. oh and a superchip. propper 90's tuning.
it had 3 sets of tyres, road tyres for the wet, cut slicks for damp and/or shitty surfaces and full slicks for dry, good tracks.
basically the previous owner spent over 3 grand on the car in 1995. he was then too scarred to track it (it was only 7 years old then dont forget) so he used it on the road. he then sold it to a mate who did the shite cammo paint job but he didnt have the balls to track it either.
it was ace on track. it owed me £500 so i wasnt too scarred to hammer it. it suprised a lot of far more powerful cars.
more later!

everything i say about your car is in jest liam and i really hope you know that. it is very clean underneath indeed
the look of fury was induced by scott hitting me in the balls with a ratchet. total cock!

that really must have hurt. I can't wait to see mine and yours together, although I think yours will put mine to shame bodywork wise

Re: budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
got a few simple jobs sorted this weekend which has cheered me up a bit.
finally managed to get hold of the front door handle covers and a couple of window winders. fitted bulbs in the spot lights. fitted a new rear bumper and straightened up the front.
the mrs has been using the car for the past week so the porsche wheels have been replaced with a pair of steelies ont the front and a pair of for alloys on the back.
my mate is about to scrap his polo with my old g60's on. he said that as long as i left his car legal i could have the wheels back.
fitted them to the golf and they just look wrong in black - i was never a fan ont he track golf either.
decided as it is only temporary to paint them orange. couldnt get any paint so matt aqua it is.
i then gave the car a wash and headed for the meet in lincoln and totally forgot to get pics. here's a couple from the meet though

Re: budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
i sold a set of bbs's last night so now have cash for coilovers. really didnt know what to go for. cant afford more than £200. there's nothing good and used for sale so it has limitted me to jom, raceland, fk and jamex. been on a few car sites and there are loads of comments for and against all.
decided against the jamex as they are blatantly rebadged jom's but £40 more expensive. a chat with liam and a few hunderd quid later and there is a shiney set of fk's on the way. can't wait to get the boxster wheels back on and sit it as low as it will go!
i have decided to do a bit of a to do list to try and motivate me to get some work done on the car. if you have any suggestions or input i am all ears...
1. Flush heater matrix. if that doesnt help anything, replace it.
2. eliminate dashboard rattles
3. replace driver's seat
4. source and fit plastic around the steering column
5. uprate sounds
6. prep and paint calipers
7. paint g60 steelies orange or silver. or both
8. source 4 rust free doors
9. clean engine bay
10. clean and paind digi engine
11. install didi motor
12. replace driver's window for green.
13. fit golfball gear knob
14. maybe relocate head unit and install cup holders. maybe
15. replace rear wiper motor and layflat
16. remove and refit arch trims in the correct place!
17. paint the panel under the front grill
18. replace the chin spoiler
19. touch up scratches on roof
20. find some badges to hide trim holes in front wings.
21. remove and refit frint wings - panel gap is terrible
22. [strike]fit coilies[strike]
that's it!

Re: budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
good luck with getting rid of a squeaky rattling dashboard. Before I rebuilt mine it was the only mk2 I've ever had that was silent inside. Now it rattles like a tin can inside and I've been chasing them for the past 2 weeks!

Just read this post through,
cant believe the car in the first few pics is the same car that came to the meet on Sunday...Great work! Loved the wheels on sunday, and will look even better once it joins Adi's Jade green on the down low
More doors ftw

Re: budget 20 valve turbo build from page 5
Cheers guys.
If your seats are definately the same as mine then i'll definately have them.
Could definately use a hand on the wings. I think the problem is when i took them off the donor car i bent them slightly to get to the a pillar bolts. Need to take them off and bend them back in again.
Right, update. Got a flyer from work so fitted the coilovers. Had a bit of help from scott but it was pretty simple anyway. Decided to ignore all advice and start off with them on their lowest possible setting. Nothing is scrubbing with the g60 steels on and 195 50 15 tyres so i'm pretty happy. It seems to be sitting fairly level, a look i'm not too fond of so i'll probably be lifting the back end 10mm or so to get some stance in there.
Pics tomorrow-too dark now
